ROSENBERG NAMED ONE
OF ACCOUNTING’S
MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE
Accounting Today
named Marc Rosenberg one of 2007’s Top 100 Most Influential People in
Accounting, the 4th consecutive year he has received that honor.
Our business continues to grow by referrals from our
clients. In fact, Marc has been recognized by INSIDE Public Accounting
as one of the most recommended CPA firm consultants in the country.
RECENT CONSULTING PROJECTS
OF THE ROSENBERG ASSOCIATES
Facilitated a partner retreat for a
9-partner firm in the southeast.
The project began with individual interviews of each partner one month
earlier.
Met with the Executive Committee of a $15 million dollar firm in the east. Because the firm was under-performing, we
worked to re-structure their firm’s management to increase profitability.
Worked with a 6-partner firm in the mid-west to create their
first-ever partner buy out plan than would accommodate the
impending retirement of a founding partner.
Attended the meeting of the Compensation Committee of a $25 million
dollar firm in the southwest to improve their methods.
Facilitated a 2-day meeting of a $13 million dollar firm on
the west coast to review and consider
merging up into a Top-50 firm.
Worked with a 4-partner firm in the east
to improve their profitability and
efficiency. We also took some
initial steps in creating a succession
plan.
Facilitated the partner retreat of a 4-partner firm in the southeast. We developed a firm vision, worked on partner
goals that support that vision, instituted systems for partner accountability,
and discussed how to improve firm morale.
SAGE ADVICE FROM MANAGING PARTNERS;
OUR E-MAIL ROUNDTABLE
We have assembled an elite group of managing partners from
across the country that respond to practice management questions posed by
various firms. This is all done by
e-mail; we call it our “E-Mail Roundtable Group.” Here are some of the more recent questions
that were addressed:
Question: Do
you have a formal mentoring program?
59% of MPs responding said YES, and several of the NOs indicated that they do something similar. 89% of mentors are either partners or
managers. In most cases, mentors are
assigned by firm management, but at some firms, those being mentored have an
opportunity to choose or opt out of the program altogether. It is very clear that mentoring programs have
a positive impact on the firms that use them.
Question: For
firms with investment advisory practices, how do you split the fees between the
originator, the person who manages the client
investment account, the CPA firm, etc.
Caveat: Regulatory rules prevent CPA Firms from
sharing commissions with unlicensed individuals. Many firms made this very clear in prefacing
their responses.
The responses we received were all over the board, but two
common methods of splitting the fees emerged:
1. Originators
of investment advisory fees often get a substantial portion of profits, much
larger than in the case of originating traditional CPA firm clients.
2. The
CPA firm shares handsomely in the profit allocation, both directly and
indirectly in the form of having the advisory firm absorb
overhead.

The Rosenberg
Associates MAP Survey
We compile an annual survey of MAP statistics of firms from
across the country. This proprietary
survey is much more reliable than any commercially available survey because (1)
we get a better cross-section of firms, and (2) we check the data for accuracy,
a big problem with commercial surveys.

How a Compensation
Committee Functions: A Model
CPA firms are increasingly realizing that the old
compensation formulas no longer work, that performance “intangibles) need to be
recognized, and that their compensation system needs to be
performance-based. This is leading to
the adoption of more and more compensation committees across the United
States.
What are compensation committees?
How do they work? Learn how to
start and operate a compensation committee from our newest publication, How a Compensation Committee Functions: A Model.
